Introduction

Imagine not knowing where you'll sleep at night. Imagine living behind a dumpster or corner store. Imagine not being able to shower, put on clean clothes or cook yourself a warm meal.

Today, millions of Americans don't have to imagine being homeless. They are living in shelters, on the streets and in other desperate situations marked by poor physical health, mental illnesses, unemployment and other challenges to their  independence and self-sufficiency.
