Citizen Action
AmeriCorps Program
The Citizen Action AmeriCorps Program works to strengthen communities by
creating and managing service projects, mobilizing and engaging new volunteers,
cultivating community leaders and building the capacity of community based
organizations. Working with a variety of community nonprofits, the Citizen
Action AmeriCorps Program seeks to develop members with the skills and
experience of service leadership, an understanding of how nonprofits and
communities work, and the know-how to lead and affect change for a lifetime.
Strengthening Communities
AmeriCorps*VISTA Initiative
Over three years, 75 VISTAs per year will serve in Volunteer Centers to recruit
volunteers and develop organizational capacity for programs to meet community
needs in four focus areas: Empowering Faith-Based and Grassroots Organizations,
Asset Development and Wealth Creation, Strengthening Families, and Homeland
Security: Emergency and Disaster.

Diversity Initiative
Through a grant from The Coca-Cola Company, Hands On Network’ Diversity
Initiative focuses on educating and training affiliates to address diversity
management issues in their organizations. Hands On Network partnered with the
American Institute for Managing Diversity (AIMD) for strategic planning and
training for this initiative. We have worked together to facilitate the
Diversity Task Force and the three-day Diversity Leadership Institute, and to
develop a Diversity Management Toolkit. Hands On Network facilitates ongoing
support through training using the toolkit as the foundation for ongoing
diversity work.
Citizen Academy
Citizen Academy programs help people: 1) critically
examine and understand social issues; and 2) use their service, learning and
leadership to impact those issues. Simply put, Citizen Academy
programs improve people’s abilities to lead and work with others to strengthen
their communities. Because they are being implemented across the nation (and
world), specific program formats vary. Nonetheless, they typically focus on
increasing understanding of social issues, teaching people how to get involved,
developing leadership skills and demystifying the political process. Current
program formats range from book clubs, conversation cafés and film screenings
to board training and placement programs, TeamWorks (team-based service
learning activities) and extended leadership development tracks.
Youth:
Ready to Respond
Helps young people plan for and respond to the health, safety and security
concerns associated with natural and man-made disasters through the development
and implementation of local service-learning projects.
